Kevin Hearne

How did you become an author?

I wrote for nineteen years until I finally wrote a book that would work for the market. There’s usually not a quick and easy path to publishing; you have to put in the work.

Is it a side hustle or your main gig?

It’s now my main gig; I wrote my first five books while still working a day job, however, as a high school English teacher.

What advice would you give someone starting out?

Make sure you finish the book. You can’t sell an incomplete novel or an idea. And once you finish it, write the next one. That’s the life.

What are you most proud of?

My epic fantasy, A Plague of Giants. I did something structurally there that’s rare; eleven different first-person points of view, all held together with a frame.

Many authors and bloggers have trouble finding time to write; do you have any tips?

You find time to write if it’s a priority. I wrote a couple of hours each night after dinner for years.

What authors are you digging right now? And why?

I love S.A. Chakraborty’s epic, The City of BrassIt’s a wild ride and confounds my expectations, and I loved it. Looking forward to the sequel.

What advice do you have for authors looking to get published?

Agents are great. Research how to get one, practice query letters, and spend the time learning how to approach them. is a good place to start.

What are you looking forward to?

Visiting Scotland next year! I’ve never been. It’ll be part vacation and part research for a new project.

Any upcoming projects you are working on?

I’m working on the third Tales of Pell book with Delilah S. Dawson, and then I’ll spend the rest of the year working on the second book of my epic fantasy trilogy.

What does your social media strategy look like?

Kevin HearneI share stuff I like, mostly: food and drink and nature photography, plus pics of my dogs. Then I throw in reminders about what books are coming out and where I’ll be if folks want to say hi.

Where can people find you online?, and on Twitter and Instagram @kevinhearne.
